Reading guide revised:

How can one LCD deliver different images to the two eyes?

The system generates views for the eye positions, weaves those images into panel pixels, and uses directional optics to separate the light. Added value spans optical materials and manufacturing, tracking components, image processing and system integration; it is not confined to one display chip.

  1. Base films and UV resins → Light-routing microstructures

The film supports the structure and UV resin can replicate it. PC, PET and PMMA are substrate options, not three mandatory stacked layers. Polymer families do not establish optical qualification.

  2. Forming, imprinting and lamination → Fixed or switchable optical routes

Micro-optical manufacturing must match panel pixels and viewing conditions. Fixed lenticular optics and switchable layers are alternatives. Named tool-to-platform cooperation requires a specific public disclosure.

  3. Eye positions and scene data → Stereo rendering and pixel weaving

Eye-position feedback supports view and output-mapping updates without mechanically rotating fixed lenses. Scene rendering and image weaving can use different processing units. Panel resolution is not per-eye resolution.

What changes the choice?

Compare the deliverable first: base film, UV resin, optical film, tool, processing service, tracking component or complete platform. BenQ Materials coatings do not establish raw-resin sales; ams OSRAM XR parts do not establish Sony adoption. This map records public capabilities, not a Sony bill of materials.

Glasses-free 3D and micro-optics

Optical film substrates

PC, PET and PMMA films

Optical films support light-routing microstructures; polymer names alone do not specify optical quality.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

Material connection

BenQ Materials lists PC, PET and PMMA base films with UV-resin coatings for lenticular products. These are product options, not three mandatory stacked layers.

Company role

BenQ Materials represents processed lens-film capabilities here, not production of the raw polymers. Existing upstream polymer nodes are reused.

Distinction: Commodity pellets are not automatically qualified optical films.

UV optical replication resins

UV curing and microstructure replication

UV-curable resins replicate optical structures in a process matched to the stamp and substrate.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

Provider and deliverable

Morphotonics offers proprietary UV-curable nanoimprint resins as process materials.

Separate film and resin roles

The base film supports the structure; the resin layer forms it. BenQ Materials lists UV coatings, which does not establish merchant sales of raw resin.

Distinction: UV optical resins are not PCB laminate resins; curing method does not establish formulation or customers.

Lenticular and light-routing films

Fixed microstructures and directional light

Micro-optics in front of a panel direct light from different pixel positions toward different viewing directions.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

Separating two views

Interlaced left and right views occupy different pixel positions. Lenses route their light; tracking updates images and pixel mapping rather than mechanically steering fixed lenses.

Product capability

BenQ Materials provides lenticular films adapted to panel pixel layouts and viewing distance. This is comparable capability, not a confirmed Sony supply relationship.

Distinction: Panel resolution is not per-eye resolution; allocation depends on the optical design.

Switchable 3D optical layers

2D/3D switching and liquid-crystal optics

Switchable optics form an alternative display route integrated with panels, controls and a content platform.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

An alternative architecture

Leia provides switchable liquid-crystal optics and a 3D display platform. This is parallel to fixed lenticular films, not a required next step after them.

Disclosed equipment cooperation

Leia and Morphotonics announced installation and qualification of Aurora 1100 for Immersity Cell production. This named cooperation is limited to the disclosed project.

Distinction: The Leia route does not establish the internal design of Sony fixed micro-optics.

Micro-optical imprint tools and stamps

Equipment, flexible stamps and processes

Replication tools and consumables manufacture micro- and nanoscale optical structures.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

How the process works

Morphotonics Roll-to-Plate technology uses flexible stamps and UV-curable resins to replicate structures on glass or polymer substrates.

Supply-chain roles

Tools, stamps, resins and finished display modules are different deliverables. Morphotonics and Leia disclose equipment cooperation; that does not establish supply to Sony.

Distinction: Not all microlenses use the same imprint equipment or process.

Micro-optical forming and alignment

Engraving, UV forming, cutting and lamination

Forming and lamination position the designed light-routing structure relative to panel pixels.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

From structure to module

BenQ Materials describes engraving, UV curing, cutting and lamination for lens films; optical design is matched to pixel layout.

Distinguish process from tools

This entry maps processing and integration capabilities, not merchant sales of standalone alignment machines.

Distinction: A compatible material specification alone does not make arbitrary panel lamination deliver the same 3D result.

Company roles

Scope of these company examples

Eye-position tracking modules

Eye localization and real-time feedback

Estimate both eye positions to update stereo rendering and display mapping.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

Position versus gaze

Glasses-free 3D needs the eyes’ positions relative to the screen; this is not identical to estimating only where a person looks.

Capability and evidence

Himax announced tracking using a structured-light WLO module and image processor. AUO Display Plus integrates tracking into 3D displays. Demonstrations and integrated systems do not prove volume sales of standalone modules.

Distinction: Tracking neither mechanically moves fixed lenses nor generates unseen scene geometry by itself.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

Component capabilities

ams OSRAM lists IR LEDs, LED/VCSEL drivers and global-shutter image sensors for XR eye tracking.

Application boundary

These are component capabilities. Emitter choice, sensor model and configuration require evidence for the specific device.

Distinction: An XR component portfolio is not a teardown bill of materials for a Sony desktop display.

3D image weaving and processing

Pixel weaving and optical mapping

Arrange left and right views into the format required by the panel and optical layer, separately from scene rendering.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

A distributed workload

A host CPU/GPU can render the scene and stereo views. Tracking, weaving and display control are allocated by architecture; they are not all simply display-driver IC tasks.

Hardware implementation

Himax announced hardware 3D Display Pixel Weaving and a CES 2025 demonstration. This establishes a disclosed technology direction, not Sony adoption or shipment volume.

Distinction: Fixed pixel positions do not imply whole-screen temporal switching between two images.

Glasses-free 3D display modules

Panels, optics, tracking and software

Integrate a panel, directional optics, image processing and viewer tracking to deliver different views to the eyes.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-29

System integrators

AUO subsidiary AUO Display Plus combines lenticular optics and tracking. Leia offers a switchable optical platform. Sony Spatial Reality Display illustrates system operation.

Reading the map

Trace materials and processes upstream. Fixed lenses and switchable optics are alternative routes. Both views share panel resources, so panel resolution is not automatically per-eye resolution.

Distinction: This is a technology supply-chain map, not a confirmed Sony supplier list.
