SUPPLY CHAIN HANDBOOK

Polymers: commodity, engineering and specialty materials

Compare polymer families, then connect formulation, processing and applications. A resin name does not specify final performance; grade, reinforcement, additives and processing conditions require product-level verification.

Most recent source review:

Reading guide revised:

Why does a resin name not establish finished-product performance?

A polymer name identifies a family, while performance also depends on grade, structure, reinforcement, additives and processing or curing. Thermoplastics form parts through suitable conversion methods; thermosetting systems react into crosslinked networks. Either can incorporate fibers, fillers or other polymers. Base resin, compounded pellets, electronic formulations and finished parts are different deliverables. Sharing a resin family does not make them directly interchangeable.

  1. Base polymers and additives → Compounded grades

Compounding combines polymers with fibers, fillers or other materials to adjust processing, mechanical and electrical behavior. Converters often buy a qualified grade rather than an unspecified pure resin.

  2. Thermoset resins and reactive ingredients → Formulations, films and composite systems

Resins such as epoxy combine with hardeners and other ingredients into processable systems, then undergo impregnation, coating or molding and cure. Reaction windows and use conditions jointly determine the formulation.

  3. Processable materials → Functional parts and validation

Conversion creates films, fibers, molded parts or cured structures. Dimensions, heat resistance and environmental performance must be checked in the real geometry and process, beyond raw-material specimens.

What changes the choice?

Start with temperature, loading, exposure and processing requirements. Injection-molding PPE blends and reactive PPE oligomers share related chemistry but have different supply forms and forming mechanisms.
