Composites: formulation, reinforcement, molding and quality

Read resin formulation, reinforcement and forming together with quality verification. Prepreg, infusion, RTM, pultrusion and winding are alternative process paths rather than a single sequence required for every product.

Most recent source review:

Reading guide revised:

Why must composite resin, reinforcement and forming process be chosen together?

Fibers provide directional reinforcement; resin transfers loads and holds the structure. Suitable impregnation, consolidation and curing must combine them. Prepreg introduces resin before layup, while infusion and RTM introduce it into dry reinforcement during forming. Pultrusion and winding suit different geometries. Viscosity and working time must match the process, while layup, voids and cure influence quality. One epoxy formulation therefore cannot be assumed suitable for every composite route.

  1. Resin, hardeners and additives → Process-ready formulation

Mixing and degassing prepare the system. Fillers and rheology additives adjust flow or sag resistance, while the cure system determines the reaction window for the intended operation.

  2. Reinforcement and tooling → Impregnated, formed structures

Prepreg is laid up and consolidated; dry preforms can use infusion or RTM. Continuous fibers can be pulled into profiles or wound around mandrels, according to geometry and reinforcement direction.

  3. Forming and cure → Qualified composite parts

Cure and any required post-cure establish the resin network. Dimensional, visual and internal-defect checks combine with performance validation before a formed part becomes an acceptable deliverable.

What changes the choice?

Choose routes around geometry: pultrusion for suitable constant sections, winding for appropriate cylindrical structures, and prepreg or liquid molding for shells. Amines and anhydrides are not uniquely tied to individual processes.

Epoxy formulation to composites: overview

Epoxy formulation: cure, fillers and rheology

Epoxy formulation, mixing and degassing

Resin, hardener and selected additives

Turn base epoxy into a process-compatible resin system by controlling mixing, viscosity, working time and entrapped air.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-05

Inputs, process and technical priorities

Infusion needs flow and wet-out, prepreg needs storage and cure windows, and casting needs bulk-exotherm control. Each requires a suitable formulation.

Distinction: More hardener does not automatically improve cure; use reaction equivalents and product-specific data.

Amine curing systems

Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic families

Amines can crosslink epoxy; their structures and modifications affect reaction rate, viscosity and curing conditions.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-05

Inputs, process and technical priorities

They appear in casting, infusion, coatings and pultrusion. Some cure near room temperature, while others require heat.

Entry sources reviewed: 2026-10-05

Inputs, process and technical priorities

It has comparatively modest equipment requirements; resin content, orientation and consistency matter, with optional vacuum-bag consolidation.
