ENGLISH OVERVIEW

Flex and Rigid-Flex PCBs

Flexible connections joined with mechanical design

Flexible boards use bendable insulation and copper circuitry to connect components in confined spaces. Rigid-flex boards combine flexible connections with rigid assembly areas, potentially reducing connectors or wiring while making mechanical design critical to circuit life.

Materials and bending conditions

Substrate, adhesive, coverlay and copper must suit bending and soldering. Polyimide is one material option; copper thickness, ductility and trace geometry must be evaluated together.

  • A flexible-circuit label alone does not specify the copper manufacturing route or fatigue performance.

Watch transitions and repeated stress

Rigid-flex boundaries, holes, solder joints and sharp trace turns can concentrate strain. Define bending zones and radius jointly with mechanical design.

  • Factory continuity testing does not prove fatigue life. Cost comparisons should include yield, assembly and repair, not only connector savings.
