ENGLISH OVERVIEW

Copper Foil for PCBs

Conduction, fine circuits and reliable interfaces

Copper foil is a starting material for PCB conductors. It can enter through copper-clad laminate or be supplied directly for suitable multilayer and build-up processes. Thickness, surface treatment, roughness and ductility influence circuit formation, loss and reliability.

Two supply routes

CCL makers laminate foil to insulation; PCB makers may also use separate foil during multilayer fabrication. These routes do not imply duplicate purchasing of the same sheet.

  • Electrodeposited and rolled foil are manufacturing categories. Low-roughness, ultrathin carrier-supported and flexible-circuit foils describe different application requirements.

Match foil to the circuit process

At high frequencies, surface geometry affects conductor loss. Compare the treated surface, measurement method, frequency and actual board insertion loss, not one roughness number.

  • Fine circuits also depend on photoresist imaging, plating and etching. SAP and mSAP do not necessarily start with the same conductive layer. Battery current-collector foil is not automatically a substitute for PCB foil.

Copper Foil for PCBs → High-Density Interconnect PCBs

Foil for some fine-line processes

Carrier-supported ultrathin copper can serve selected fine-line processes; it is not required for every HDI board.

Copper Foil for PCBs → Flex and Rigid-Flex PCBs

Bend-tolerant conductor

Flex-circuit foil must meet bending and thermal conditions; grains, thickness and circuit design affect reliability.
