Reinforcement that also affects electrical behavior

Fine glass fibers are woven into cloth and impregnated with resin to reinforce many CCL products and package-substrate cores. Composition, thermal expansion and weave distribution affect the finished material; not every circuit board uses glass cloth.

Composition, weave and treatment

The same glass composition can use different thicknesses and weaves. Read glass type, cloth style, thickness and resin content together; surface treatment must suit the resin.

  • E-glass, low-dielectric glass, low-expansion/high-modulus glass and ultrathin or spread cloth serve different requirements. Supplier family names are not universal grades.

Signal paths and package cores

Signals encounter a glass-resin composite, so local material distribution as well as average dielectric properties matters. Validate routing, impregnation, drilling and interlayer quality together.

  • Glass cloth may reinforce an organic package core while ABF supplies build-up insulation. They are different layers and are not direct substitutes.

Many rigid CCLs use glass fabric for reinforcement, electrical properties and dimensional stability; not all CCL contains glass.
