SUPPLY CHAIN HANDBOOK

Computers, notebooks and tablets: components and system roles

Trace chips, boards, mechanics, batteries and manufacturing across desktops, notebooks and tablets. Shared components reuse existing chains; AI PCs are a subset, not a replacement for general computer categories.

Reading guide revised:

Which supply-chain roles are shared across desktops, notebooks and tablets?

All three share processing, memory, storage and circuit-board capabilities but integrate them differently. Desktops favor expansion cards; notebooks embed keyboards, screens, batteries and hinges; tablets emphasize touch and integrated SoCs. AI PC is a functional positioning for a subset of computers.

  1. Chips and PCBs → Motherboards / logic boards

Bare boards carry circuits while processors and memory provide compute. Board design integrates power and interfaces; motherboard assembly is distinct from bare-board fabrication.

  2. Mechanics, batteries and input modules → ODM system integration

Notebooks add keyboards, touchpads, hinges and packs. Tablets focus on touch displays and batteries, with optional pens or keyboards.

  3. Systems and brands → Channels and use cases

ODMs provide design and manufacturing while brands manage positioning, sales and support. Mapped capabilities do not establish brand orders.

What changes the choice?

Identify the deliverable: CPU, bare PCB, motherboard, battery pack, enclosure or complete system. Distinguish desktop PSUs from laptop adapters, GPUs from graphics cards, and AI PCs from general PCs. Not every node is mandatory in every device.
