SUPPLY CHAIN HANDBOOK

Memory: DRAM, flash, modules and HBM

Distinguish memory chips, controllers, modules and finished storage products, then examine HBM and advanced integration. Similar product names do not imply the same supply-chain role; capacity, bandwidth and packaging describe different requirements.

Reading guide revised:

Why are HBM, DRAM modules and SSDs not interchangeable products?

They occupy different system roles. DRAM supplies working memory; HBM is a stacked DRAM architecture emphasizing bandwidth and close integration. NAND combines with controllers, firmware and packaging to create persistent storage. Capacity measures how much data fits, while bandwidth measures data movement. The chain also separates chip manufacturing, packaging and testing, controllers and finished modules, clarifying what each company actually delivers.

  1. DRAM chips and supporting components → Memory modules

Module manufacturers combine chips, boards and supporting devices, then test the product. Chip fabrication, module design and sales are distinct capabilities; a module brand does not identify a wafer manufacturer.

  2. NAND, controllers and firmware → SSDs and embedded storage

NAND supplies the medium. Controllers and firmware manage access and devices, while packaging and interfaces create usable products. A controller vendor may also supply a broader solution.

  3. HBM and memory integration → AI data hierarchies

HBM base-die and stack integration support high-bandwidth exchange. NAND-based extension or caching places suitable data in another tier, adding capacity options without providing equivalent bandwidth.

What changes the choice?

Ask how quickly data must be accessed and whether it must survive power loss before comparing capacity and cost. Fast working memory and larger persistent storage cooperate while performing different tasks.
