ENGLISH OVERVIEW
Optical Engines
Converting between electrical and optical data
An optical engine combines photonic devices, driver and receiver electronics, and optical coupling to convert data between electrical and optical forms. It may sit near an ASIC or inside a module; the product definition determines which components it includes.
Light supply and data modulation
In an external continuous-wave laser design, the laser supplies light and the modulator encodes the data. Detectors and electronics recover incoming data.
- Other light-source integration methods change the component boundaries.
Shorter electrical links create new integration demands
Moving optics closer can reduce a particular electrical-link burden, while exposing the engine to heat and changing assembly, testing and repair.
- Compare power and cost at the same system boundary. OIF co-packaged-engine specifications are useful interface examples, not a universal product format.
Separate engines from manufacturing platforms
TSMC provides a manufacturing and integration platform; Fabrinet provides packaging and manufacturing services. Neither role should be conflated with a finished optical engine product.
Connected industry roles
Links describe supply, classification, technology or services. They do not establish transactions between individual companies.
Silicon Photonics ↔ Optical Engines
Photonics platform
Silicon photonics can integrate optical paths, modulation and reception, together with electronics and packaging.
