Silicon Photonics
An integrated optical technology platform
Silicon photonics integrates waveguides, modulators and detectors on a silicon-based platform for transceivers, optical engines or optical I/O. It describes a technology; CPO describes how optics and electronic chips are packaged together.
A silicon platform can combine other materials
A complete optical system may include other semiconductor materials and electronic chips. Silicon photonics does not mean every component consists only of silicon.
- Optical paths, coupling, wavelengths, temperature and post-package behavior require testing beyond electrical wafer tests.
Several packaging destinations
Silicon-photonic engines can serve CPO or pluggable modules. The platform alone does not determine packaging location, cost or serviceability.
- Fiber alignment and package manufacturing can remain difficult even when chip fabrication scales.
One technology, multiple architectures
Coherent has demonstrated silicon-photonics pluggable modules, while TSMC COUPE supports electro-optical integration. Silicon photonics is not synonymous with CPO.
